Developments in Bangladesh

August 6, 2024

I have been concerned by growing political violence and instability in Bangladesh in recent weeks, and the use of unnecessary and excessive force against peaceful protestors.

With former prime minister Sheikh Hasina now having resigned, it is important that order quickly be restored and a timetable for fresh elections and a return to legitimate civilian rule be set.

I hope for the rapid implementation of President Shahabuddin’s promise to release political prisoners from detention, end the curfew, and lift the internet and telecommunications blackout.

I also call on protestors and security forces alike to behave with restraint and respect towards their fellow citizens at this uncertain time. The rights of all Bangladesh’s people must be respected equally.
